The village of Saffuriya was attacked on 16 July 1948 and
its 5,000 inhabitants expelled. Today most are refugees in Lebanon and
Syria, but a number live two miles away in Nazareth in their own
neighbourhood called Sufafra. They can still see the lands of their former
village, and families often return to collect water from the spring. In
2006, a year after this photo was taken, the authorities erected a wire
fence around the spring to keep them out. (April 2005)
