The familiar turnstiles of a permanent checkpoint, this one at Beit Iba. Palestinians are allowed through one at a time, and then made to open and unpack their bags at a distance from the soldiers. Only then can they approach the booth (on the right of the picture), where soldiers check their ID papers. Any found on a wanted list -- and the list can include student activists and men related to someone already in jail -- are detained. Most young men, fearful that they could be on the list, are reluctant to use the checkpoints.
